About the Nigerian Teachers Registration council (TRCN)
The Nigerian Teachers Registration council (TRCN) is an agency of the Federal Ministry of Education. It was established by the TRCN Degree NO. 31 of 1993 (now TRCN Act CAP T3 of 2004) with major mandate of regulation and control of the teaching profession at all levels of the Nigerian Education Syetem, both in Public and Private sectors.
The Purpose for the Registration – Nigerian Teachers Registration council (TRCN)
Most people especially teachers have been asking for the aim of the current exercise. The registration of the Nigerian Teachers Registration council (TRCN) is for the purpose of professionalization to facilitate the upliftment of teachers’ status and dignity as professionals.
COMPULSORY REGISTRATION OF THE TRCN
Other countries do it and as obtain in other noble professions, the law makes it an offence for anyone to engage in teaching without registration. This is clearly spelt out in section 17(2) of the TRCN Act which states that if on or after the commencement of the Act, any person not being a registered member of the profession is guilty of an offence. The Act further states that employers and other officials who aid and abet the employment of unqualified/unregistered teachers are themselves guilty of the same offence and shall receive same punishment.
QUALIFICATION FOR THE TRCN REGISTRATION
The qualification for the TRCN is simple. To be registered as a professional teacher, a person must possess a teaching qualification not lower in standards than the Nigeria certificate in Education (NCE). Holders of Teachers Grade Two with effect from 2006 are no longer being registered. Those with B.sc or other qualification wishing to join the teaching profession must still register with the Nigerian Teachers Registration council (TRCN).
