The inland drainage called Lake Chad has so many facts and details that you may not have known or read anywhere. This Chad has been in existence over many years ago and bordering on four countries. Sadly enough it is in the heart of the dreaded terrorist group known as book haram. So I want you to know more about Lake Chad and its interesting facts.
Lake Chad is a shallow endorheic lake located in Africa. It is economically important to the west and central regions of Africa as it provides water to over 50 million people in both regions in Africa. The four countries bordering this beautiful lake include Nigeria, Niger, Cameroun and Chad. Lake Chad gave its name to the country of Chad. The local name of Chad means “Large expanse of water”.
The lake is the remnant of a former inland sea known as Paleolake Mega-Chad. At its largest, sometime before 5000BC, Lake Mega-Chad was the largest of four Saharan Paleolakes in Africa then. One real fact about Lake Chad is that it was first surveyed from shore by Europeans in 1823, and it was considered to be one of the largest lakes in the world then. The chari River and by its tributary the Logone, provides 90% of the lake water with small amount coming from the Yobe River in Nigeria/Niger. Now wait for this, do you know that despite the high levels of evaporation lake Chad is still a fresh water lake. The lake is the fourth largest African lake after lakes Victoria, Tanganyika and Nyassa.
FLORA AND FAUNA
Lake Chad is home to more than 44 species of algae, full of swamps and numerous smaller islands. The entire basin holds over 150 species of fishes. Like I told you before there are many floating islands in the lake with a variety of wildlife including elephants, crocodile and hippopotamus.
SETTLEMENT NEAR THE LAKE
The area surrounding the lakes contains earliest evidence of hominin occupation yet found in western Africa and it appears that the lake has been settled since 500 BC
OIL EXPLRATION AND DISCOVERIES
Petroleum reserves have been discovered in Niger and Chad while a massive search for oil in the lake Chad side of Nigeria is been undertake to search for oil in the region.
It’s all about Lake Chad, I will advise you to go visit this area and taste the real look at Mother Nature at its best. Thanks
